What is TN Pongal Gift Scheme?
Tamil Nadu Pongal Gift Scheme is an annual state government initiative that provides free gifts to ration card (PDS) holders during the Pongal harvest festival (January). The scheme has evolved over years: Current package (2026): ₹1,000 cash transferred to Aadhaar-linked bank account + free rice (1-2 kg) + free sugar (1 kg) + free dhoti/saree (for priority households). Some years also include coconut, turmeric, and other festival items. Total value of Pongal package: approximately ₹1,500-2,000 per family.
