What is Ennum Ezhuthum TN?
Ennum Ezhuthum, the Numeracy and Literacy Mission of the School Education Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, is designed to make sure every Class 1 to 3 child in a government school masters foundational reading, writing and arithmetic — the skills that all later learning depends on. The mission uses Activity-Based Learning methods so that early-grade teaching is playful and child-centred rather than rote. As an extension of the same digital-education push, the state distributes free tablets to Class 6, 7 and 8 students in government and government-aided schools, delivered through the school headmaster with no separate application. Benefiting over 40 lakh students annually, the programme combines classroom reform with hardware support to close learning gaps in public education across Tamil Nadu.
Under this scheme, eligible beneficiaries receive Free tablet for Class 6-8 students + foundational literacy/numeracy programme for Class 1-3. The scheme was launched in 2021 and is implemented by the Government of Tamil Nadu.
