What is TN Old Age Pension?
Senior citizens in Tamil Nadu who have crossed 60 and have no reliable means of support can draw a monthly pension of ₹1,000 under the state's Old Age Pension scheme, run by the Department of Social Welfare and Women Empowerment. The payout blends a ₹800/month contribution from the state with the central IGNOAPS component — ₹200/month for those aged 60-79 and ₹500/month once a beneficiary turns 80 — pushing the total to as much as ₹1,500/month for the oldest pensioners. To qualify, a person must genuinely be without sufficient means of subsistence, have no family members supporting them, and keep annual household income under ₹1.2 lakh. More than 30 lakh senior citizens across the state currently draw this pension, either straight into an Aadhaar-linked bank account or via an Old Age Pension Booklet collected at the Taluk office, and applications go through the Taluk Social Welfare Officer or the nearest e-Sevai centre.
