What is Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam?
Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam, meaning Healthcare at Your Doorstep, is a flagship public-health initiative of the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Tamil Nadu, launched by Chief Minister MK Stalin in 2021. Instead of waiting for patients to reach a hospital, teams of ASHA workers and nurses make weekly visits to every household across the state to screen residents for 27 diseases and health conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, tuberculosis, oral and cervical cancer, and mental-health issues. Free medicines are dispensed on the spot for treatable conditions, and patients needing advanced care receive a referral to a Government hospital. With over 3.5 crore households covered, the programme removes cost and distance as barriers to early diagnosis, especially for the elderly, differently-abled, and chronically ill.
