What is Ambedkar Vasati Yojana?
Dr B R Ambedkar Vasati Yojana is a rural housing programme that helps Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe families in Karnataka build a permanent home on land they already own. It is run by the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation of the Karnataka government, which sanctions ₹1.5 lakh for a house in a normal area and up to ₹3 lakh where the terrain is difficult or hilly and building costs are higher. The grant is not handed over in one go: after a beneficiary is selected at the taluk level, the amount is released directly to the family's Aadhaar-linked bank account in three instalments that are tied to verified stages of construction. Because the family must hold the plot in its own name, the scheme turns existing land into a finished pucca house rather than offering a ready-built unit, and over 6 lakh houses have been completed this way.
