What is Sabooj Sathi West Bengal?
Sabooj Sathi (Green Companion) is West Bengal government's flagship scheme providing free bicycles to all students of Classes 9–12 studying in government schools, aided schools, and madrasas across West Bengal. Launched in 2015 by CM Mamata Banerjee, it is one of the world's largest bicycle distribution programmes — over 1.20 crore bicycles distributed to date. The scheme dramatically improves school attendance, particularly for girl students in rural areas who may have to travel several kilometres to reach the nearest secondary school. Students need not apply separately — bicycles are distributed directly through schools. All classes 9–12 students, both boys and girls, are eligible regardless of income or caste.
Under this scheme, eligible beneficiaries receive Free bicycle for all Class 9–12 students in WB government/aided schools and madrasas. The scheme was launched in 2015 and is implemented by the Government of West Bengal.
