What is Swasthya Sathi Scheme?
Swasthya Sathi is West Bengal government's flagship health assurance scheme, run by the state Health & Family Welfare Department, that gives every family a smart card worth ₹5 lakh of cashless treatment per year at empanelled government and private hospitals. Unlike most insurance products, there is no income test and no premium for the household — the entire cost is borne by the state, and the card is issued in the name of the senior-most woman of the family. Coverage extends to more than 500 medical and surgical packages, including cardiac care, cancer, dialysis and ICU stays, with no cap on family size. Hospitals settle bills directly with the scheme, so patients pay nothing at the counter. More than 10 crore residents are covered.
Under this scheme, eligible beneficiaries receive ₹5 lakh cashless health insurance per family per year. The scheme was launched in 2016 and is implemented by the Government of West Bengal.
