MahaDBT Post-Matric SBC

About this student scheme

Special Backward Class (SBC) is a purely Maharashtra-state category — a set of 7 communities that the state government has classified as socially and educationally backward but that are NOT on the central OBC list of the Ministry of Social Justice. The recognised SBC communities in Maharashtra are Dhangar, Vanjari, Kunbi, Waddar, Bhoi, Beldar and a few others notified by state government resolutions. Because SBC does not appear on the central OBC list, SBC students cannot claim central OBC post-matric scholarships — this dedicated MahaDBT scheme is their route. The scholarship is administered by the VJNT, OBC & SBC Welfare Department, covers full tuition and ₹160-₹1,000 monthly maintenance, and applies to about 1 lakh SBC students each year. The family income ceiling of ₹1.5 lakh is the same as the OBC track, and a state SBC caste certificate (distinct from an OBC certificate) is the specific document that unlocks eligibility.

Which students qualify

• ✓ Must belong to a community listed under Maharashtra's Special Backward Classes (SBC) category and hold a valid SBC caste certificate
• ✓ Should hold a Maharashtra domicile certificate confirming state residence
• ✓ Open to students at any stage from Class 11 through to a PhD programme
• ✓ Family's total annual income must not exceed ₹1.5 lakh
• ✓ An Aadhaar number is compulsory since the scholarship is paid out via DBT
