What is Punjab Farmers Debt Relief Scheme?
Punjab Farmers Debt Relief Scheme provides waiver or restructuring of agricultural loans up to ₹2 lakh for marginal and small farmers of Punjab. Implemented by Punjab Agriculture Department, the scheme targets farmers who borrowed from Punjab State Cooperative Banks, Primary Agriculture Cooperative Societies (PACS), commercial banks, and district cooperative banks. The scheme reduces the debt burden on small landholding farmers (up to 5 acres) who are unable to repay institutional loans due to low crop yields, crop failure, or price crashes. Loan waiver is processed through the bank directly with state government reimbursement.
Under this scheme, eligible beneficiaries receive Agricultural loan waiver/restructuring up to ₹2 lakh for marginal (up to 2.5 acres) and small (2.5–5 acres) farmers of Punjab. The scheme was launched in 2017 and is implemented by the Government of Punjab.
