What is Meghalaya Soil Water Conservation Scheme?

The Meghalaya Soil and Water Conservation Scheme provides ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 per farmer for construction of terrace farming structures, contour bunding, check dams, and water harvesting pits to prevent soil erosion and improve water retention for agriculture in Meghalaya's hilly terrain. Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo tribal farmers practicing traditional jhum (shifting) cultivation are encouraged to transition to permanent terrace farming with soil and water conservation structures. The scheme is implemented by the Agriculture Department in convergence with MGNREGS (providing labour wages) and PM-Krishi Sinchai Yojana (drip and sprinkler irrigation subsidy). Priority is given to farmers in highly erosion-prone sub-watersheds and areas transitioning away from jhum cultivation.

Under this scheme, eligible beneficiaries receive ₹15,000–₹40,000 for terrace construction, contour bunding, and check dams + MGNREGS labour wages + PM-Krishi Sinchai drip irrigation subsidy for Meghalaya tribal farmers. The scheme was launched in 2014 and is implemented by the Government of Meghalaya.
