What is Meghalaya Sohra Eco-Tourism Scheme?

The Meghalaya Sohra (Cherrapunji) Eco-Tourism Scheme promotes sustainable eco-tourism enterprises in and around Sohra — the wettest place on Earth — and the broader East Khasi Hills region. The scheme provides ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh in enterprise support to local Khasi tribal families setting up village homestays, nature trail guiding services, waterfall tour operations, rock climbing and trekking enterprises, and eco-tourism camps. Implemented by the Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) in partnership with MBDA, the scheme aims to generate local tribal livelihoods from Meghalaya's rich natural landscape — living root bridges, Nohkalikai Falls, Mawsmai Caves, and Dainthlen Falls are key tourism draws near Sohra.

Under this scheme, eligible beneficiaries receive ₹1–₹5 lakh for Khasi tribal eco-tourism enterprises near Sohra (Cherrapunji) — village homestays, nature trail guiding, waterfall tours, trekking camps. The scheme was launched in 2019 and is implemented by the Government of Meghalaya.
