What is PMSMA — Safe Motherhood Checkup?
Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA) is a centrally-funded initiative under the National Health Mission (NHM) launched in 2016. It guarantees free comprehensive antenatal care (ANC) checkup to every pregnant woman on the 9th of each month at government health facilities. Under PMSMA, all pregnant women in their 2nd and 3rd trimester get: free blood pressure measurement, weight, abdomen check, haemoglobin test, urine albumin/sugar test, blood group and Rh factor, syphilis test (VDRL), and ultrasound (where available). Doctors from private sector also voluntarily participate as PMSMA volunteers to extend services at PHCs and CHCs in rural areas. High-risk pregnancies are identified, labelled with red stickers, and tracked through delivery. Over 3.8 crore ANC checkups have been conducted since launch. States use PMSMA data to track maternal mortality and reduce preventable maternal deaths.
Under this scheme, eligible beneficiaries receive Free comprehensive antenatal checkup on 9th of every month + Blood tests (Hb, blood group, VDRL, urine) + Ultrasound where available + High-risk pregnancy identification + Linked to JSY (cash incentive for institutional delivery).
