What is Birsa Harit Gram Yojana JH?

Birsa Harit Gram Yojana is Jharkhand's flagship plantation-cum-livelihood programme run by the Rural Development Department in convergence with MGNREGS. Its aim is to turn unused rural land into productive orchards while giving poor households steady wage work. Every covered family receives 300 fruit-bearing saplings free of cost — mango, litchi, guava, amla, banana and jackfruit — to plant on their own or panchayat land. The labour of digging, planting and maintaining the orchard is paid as MGNREGS wages, which are credited to the worker's bank account. After the trees mature in about four to five years, families can earn roughly ₹20,000 to ₹50,000 a year from the fruit harvest. Launched in 2020, the scheme has covered over 30 lakh households, with SC/ST families given first priority.

Common Mistakes — Why Birsa Harit Gram Yojana JH Applications Get Rejected

  • Applying without an active MGNREGA Job Card, which is mandatory because the plantation wages are paid through MGNREGS.
  • Having no clear land record or Gram Panchayat permission for the plot, so the plantation site cannot be approved.
  • A bank account that is not Aadhaar-linked, which holds up the MGNREGS wage payment for plantation work.
  • Not committing to maintain the orchard for the full five years, after which families risk losing out on the fruit-harvest income.
💡

Insider Tips for Birsa Harit Gram Yojana JH

  • Get your MGNREGA Job Card made or updated at the Gram Panchayat first, since the plantation wages flow through MGNREGS.
  • Keep your land records or written panchayat permission ready so the plantation site is approved without delay.
  • Plan the planting before the monsoon so the 300 saplings establish well, and tend them through the early years for a better harvest.
  • Make sure your Aadhaar-linked bank account is active so the MGNREGS wages for digging, planting and maintenance reach you on time.
