ICMR-JRF Medical Research

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Junior Research Fellowship is India's specialised research fellowship for candidates entering PhDs in medical, biomedical, public health, medical statistics, health economics, and pharmacological research. Where CSIR-JRF covers broad science and DBT-JRF covers biotech, ICMR-JRF is the fellowship built specifically around India's medical-research infrastructure — the 26 ICMR institutes plus recognised medical research centres. It is smaller in scale than CSIR or DBT (only ~50-60 fellowships per year), but for a career in health research, it is often the most well-aligned single option.

What ICMR-JRF opens access to

ICMR runs 26 national institutes across India, each focused on a specific disease or public-health domain. The list is worth understanding because your PhD experience is shaped much more by the institute than by the fellowship itself:

If you already have a research area in mind — say, cancer registries or tuberculosis or reproductive health — matching your interest to the right ICMR institute is more important than the fellowship's amount.

The ICMR-JRF Entrance Examination

The ICMR-JRF is awarded through the annual ICMR-JRF Entrance Examination, held once a year (typically July). Structure:

- Section A — General Aptitude (research aptitude, quantitative reasoning, English comprehension) - Section B — Life Sciences (biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, immunology, cell biology, microbiology, physiology) - Section C — Social Sciences (choice between Statistics/Public Health/Economics)

Candidates choose Section B OR Section C, but Section A is mandatory. The exam is competitive; typically 25,000-30,000 candidates apply for the ~50-60 slots, giving a selection rate under 0.5%. This is the tightest of the science-fellowship exams by ratio, which is worth knowing before you plan around it.

The fellowship amount and duration

ICMR-JRF pays the standard research-fellowship rate: ₹37,000/month for the first 2 years (JRF) and ₹42,000/month for the next 3 years (SRF), plus an annual contingency of ₹20,000. Total value over the 5-year PhD works out to roughly ₹25 lakh.

The specific documentation issue for medical candidates

ICMR-JRF accepts candidates with a Master's in Life Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Public Health, Medical Statistics, and related fields. It does not require an MBBS — medical graduates can apply through an entirely different track (ICMR's MD/PhD combined programmes, and post-MBBS PhD schemes at institutes like PGIMER, AIIMS).

If you have an MBBS and want to do research, ICMR-JRF is not the primary route — look at AIIMS PhD entrance or the ICMR Short-Term Studentship (STS) for medical students, plus the DHR (Department of Health Research) fellowships for young clinicians.

The disbursement pattern

Fellowship payments are made through DBT to Aadhaar-linked bank accounts, but with an ICMR-specific twist: disbursement runs through the host institute's academic office rather than directly from ICMR to the candidate. This means administrative delays at your host institute (someone on leave, someone new taking over PhD administration) can pause your stipend for a month or two even when ICMR itself has released the funds. Follow up with the institute PhD coordinator personally in April and October each year to check that the disbursement is running.

Renewal and the SRF upgrade

The 2-year-to-3-year JRF-to-SRF upgrade requires a formal upgrade seminar, a signed thesis-progress report by your supervisor, and endorsement by the institute director. ICMR is stricter than CSIR or DBT on this — a fair number of candidates have had their SRF upgrade delayed by 2-4 months due to incomplete documentation. Prepare the upgrade seminar and progress report by month 22, not month 24.

Where ICMR-JRF sits in the medical-research fellowship stack

For candidates targeting medical/biomedical research, the practical priority order is:

1. PMRF if PhD admission is at IIT / IISc / IIIT / IISER / NIT — highest amount, broadest. 2. ICMR-JRF if research area maps clearly to one of the 26 ICMR institutes. 3. DBT-JRF Category I or II if research is more molecular-biology / life-science than clinical-medical. 4. CSIR-JRF Life Sciences as an alternative — same stipend, different institute network. 5. AIIMS / PGIMER PhD direct admission — for candidates who prefer an AIIMS PhD environment over an ICMR one.
