What is FAME India Phase 2 — EV Subsidy?
FAME India (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles) Phase 2 is the central government's flagship EV adoption programme, implemented by the Ministry of Heavy Industries with ₹10,000 crore budget (2019-2024, further extended). FAME II provides upfront purchase subsidies on electric vehicles to lower their sticker price. Subsidy rates: Electric 2-wheelers: ₹10,000-15,000 per vehicle (₹10,000/kWh battery capacity, max ₹50,000 per vehicle, capped at 15% of ex-factory price); Electric 3-wheelers/e-rickshaws: Up to ₹50,000; Electric 4-wheelers (private cars): Pilot subsidy for BEV cars (e.g., Tata Nexon EV got ₹1.5 lakh subsidy under initial phase); Electric buses: ₹20-54 lakh per bus (state transport undertakings). Over 14 lakh electric 2-wheelers and 9,000+ electric buses were supported under FAME II. FAME II was succeeded by PM E-DRIVE scheme (2024) and PM e-Bus Sewa — check those for current subsidies.
Under this scheme, eligible beneficiaries receive Upfront purchase subsidy on EVs: ₹10,000-50,000 on e-2 wheelers + ₹50,000 on e-3 wheelers + ₹1.5 lakh on electric cars (pilot) + ₹20-54 lakh on electric buses + Charging infrastructure development. The scheme was launched in 2019 and is implemented by the Government of India.
