मध्य प्रदेश सरकार 60 वर्ष या उससे अधिक आयु के आयकर-मुक्त वरिष्ठ नागरिकों को प्रतिवर्ष एक बार देश के प्रमुख धार्मिक स्थलों की मुफ्त तीर्थ यात्रा कराती है। यात्रा विशेष ट्रेन से होती है — ट्रेन, भोजन, आवास और चिकित्सा सहायता सब सरकार देती है।

How the Train Journey Actually Works
The scheme runs pilgrimage trains typically 12-16 times per year, each covering a specific circuit — Rameshwaram-Madurai-Tirupati, Dwarka-Somnath, Varanasi-Gaya, Amritsar Golden Temple, Puri-Jagannath, Shirdi-Trimbakeshwar, and others. Each train carries 800-1,000 senior citizens from various MP districts, with medical staff on board, three meals a day, air-conditioned coaches, and dedicated bus transport at the destination for local sightseeing. Each pilgrimage is typically 5-7 days. The state Culture Department coordinates with IRCTC to schedule these dedicated trains.
The Application Draw System
Applications received exceed available seats by 5-10x for popular routes. Selection is done through a computerised draw at the district collector's office, with priority weightage to: (a) applicants aged 65+, (b) applicants who never travelled under the scheme before, (c) BPL applicants, (d) SC/ST/OBC applicants. General-category applicants aged 60-65 with average income can face 2-3 year waits for popular circuits like Rameshwaram. First-time applicants targeting less-competitive circuits (Amritsar, Puri) often get selected in the first application cycle.
What to Bring on the Journey — Practical Checklist
- Aadhaar card, MP Samagra ID, and the confirmation letter issued after selection.
- Current-year medical fitness certificate from a government doctor — the scheme requires this before boarding.
- Regular medications for at least 10 days — the on-board medical staff carries basic first-aid but not personal prescriptions.
- Comfortable walking shoes and warm clothing for the pilgrimage sites — many are at higher altitudes or involve considerable walking.
- Small cash amount (₹2,000-3,000) for personal offerings, souvenirs and any extra local transport — the scheme covers essentials but not personal expenditure.
