PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is the central government's flagship rooftop solar scheme providing 300 units of free electricity per month to 1 crore households across India. Launched in February 2024, the scheme offers massive subsidies for installing rooftop solar panels and virtually eliminates electricity bills for participating households.

Note: Many states offer additional subsidies on top of the central subsidy. Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan and UP have state-level top-up subsidies.

How to Apply — Step by Step

1. Visit pmsuryaghar.gov.in
2. Click "Apply for Rooftop Solar"
3. Register with your electricity consumer number and mobile
4. Select your state and electricity distribution company (DISCOM)
5. Get an approved vendor list from the portal
6. Choose a vendor and get the system installed
7. Apply for net metering connection through your DISCOM
8. Submit installation report to get subsidy credited directly to your bank account

How to Check Application Status

1. Go to pmsuryaghar.gov.in
2. Click "Track Application"
3. Enter your registered mobile number or application reference number
4. Click Submit to see your current application stage

Eligibility

• Any Indian household with own roof/terrace (owned or rented with landlord permission)
• Must have a valid electricity connection from a DISCOM
• No income limit — all household categories are eligible
• Roof area of at least 10 sq. metres required for 1 kW installation
• One application per electricity meter connection

• Aadhaar card
• Electricity bill (latest month)
• Bank account details (for subsidy transfer)
• Roof ownership document or landlord consent letter
• Passport-size photograph

Loan Option Available

If you can't afford the remaining cost after subsidy, collateral-free loans are available through nationalised banks at just 7% interest rate. The PM Surya Ghar portal links directly to bank loan applications. Monthly EMI is typically lower than your current electricity bill — making the scheme self-financing from day one.

Extra Benefit — Sell Surplus Power

Any electricity your panels generate beyond what you consume is sent to the grid. Your electricity company pays you for this surplus at the net metering rate — meaning your electricity bill can go to zero AND you may receive credits every month.
