National Scholarship for PwD Students 2026 — ₹700-₹1,600/Month + Tuition

The National Scholarship for Persons with Disabilities (NSPwD) is the largest central scholarship dedicated to PwD students by beneficiary count — over 16,000 students supported every year across school and higher education. Unlike AICTE Saksham, which is a narrow ₹50,000-per-year support restricted to technical UG programmes, NSPwD is a three-part scholarship that follows a PwD student from Class 9 all the way through PhD, adjusting the stipend and the additional allowances by stage. It is administered by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) under the Ministry of Social Justice, and the money moves through the National Scholarship Portal like most other central scholarships.

The three components — and which one applies to you

The scheme is structured as three separate but linked components:

Pre-Matric (Class 9-10) provides ₹350-₹500 per month plus a small book/uniform allowance, disbursed through the school. This component is aimed at keeping PwD students in the education pipeline through Class 10 — the drop-out rate for PwD students at this stage has historically been much higher than for non-PwD peers.

Post-Matric (Class 11 to PhD) provides ₹700-₹1,600 per month depending on the level of study, plus a tuition-fee reimbursement (subject to a state-notified cap) and a book allowance for professional courses. This is the most-used component and covers the bulk of the 16,000+ annual beneficiaries.

Top Class Education provides full tuition, hostel, mess and book charges for PwD students admitted to any of a notified list of about 287 top institutions — IITs, IIMs, NITs, AIIMS, NLUs, IISc, IIITs, top central and state universities. This is the highest-value component of NSPwD; students admitted to a top institution should always confirm whether their institution is on the DEPwD Top-Class list.

The eligibility gate — UDID and income

Two documents decide the application:

UDID (Unique Disability ID) card — mandatory. The UDID replaced state-level disability certificates in 2017; every central PwD scheme now requires it. Applications for UDID are filed at swavlambancard.gov.in and take 30-90 days to be issued, so the practical advice for a Class 9 or Class 11 student targeting NSPwD is to apply for the UDID before the academic year begins, not after.

Family income certificate ≤ ₹2.5 lakh per year — this is a much lower income ceiling than AICTE Saksham (₹8 lakh) or the SC/ST post-matric schemes (₹2.5 lakh with periodic upward revisions). Applicants whose family income is between ₹2.5 lakh and ₹8 lakh should still apply — the state-issued income certificate is the accepted proof — but should also apply to AICTE Saksham (if in a technical course) or state-specific PwD schemes with higher income ceilings.

Where NSPwD sits relative to AICTE Saksham

The single most common question we get from PwD families is whether to apply to NSPwD or AICTE Saksham. The honest answer is: apply to both if eligible, but at the disbursement stage you can hold only one at a time under the "one central scholarship per student per year" rule.

The choice usually comes down to course type and income. A PwD student in engineering with a family income of ₹5 lakh is not eligible for NSPwD (income too high) but is eligible for AICTE Saksham. A PwD student in a BA / BSc / MA / commerce course cannot apply to AICTE Saksham (not a technical course) but is eligible for NSPwD if income is under ₹2.5 lakh. A PwD student in engineering with family income under ₹2.5 lakh is eligible for both — in that case, the Top Class component of NSPwD is usually the better choice if the institution is on the notified list, because it covers full fees and hostel; otherwise AICTE Saksham's ₹50,000/year is competitive.

Disbursement — the specific administrative choke point

DEPwD releases NSPwD funds through DBT to the applicant's Aadhaar-linked bank account. The disbursement pattern is quarterly for Pre-Matric and semi-annual for Post-Matric. The typical lag from NSP application to first disbursement is 4-6 months, subject to the institution's verification step.

The specific choke point that catches most first-time applicants is the institution verification — the institution's scholarship cell (or the school principal for Pre-Matric) has to log into NSP and mark the applicant as "currently studying, all documents verified" before disbursement is triggered. If the applicant does not follow up with the scholarship cell in December-January of the academic year, the verification often does not happen on time and the first tranche gets pushed by a semester.

Renewal — the annual step that many families miss

NSPwD does not automatically continue year-on-year. Every academic year, the applicant must file a renewal application on NSP with updated documents: current-year admission proof, previous-year marksheet showing minimum attendance and pass grades, and current-year income certificate. Families that treat NSPwD as a one-time application and forget to renew lose the following year's disbursement.
