AICTE Saksham Scholarship 2026 — ₹50,000/Year for PwD Students in Technical Education

The AICTE Saksham Scholarship is a small but well-targeted scheme with an unusual profile — a ₹50,000-per-year support specifically for students with a 40%+ certified disability who are entering AICTE-approved technical programmes. Launched in 2014, it now sits alongside AICTE Pragati (for girls) and the older AICTE Post-Graduate Scholarship as one of three AICTE-run financial support schemes for the technical-education pipeline. Where it stands apart is the very specific eligibility gate — you need both a UDID (Unique Disability ID) card and a Medical Board disability certificate before the application will even validate on the National Scholarship Portal.

Why the numbers are worth understanding

The scheme sanctions 1,000 fresh scholarships per year — split roughly across engineering (the largest share), pharmacy, architecture, MBA/MCA and hotel management. Because the application volume from PwD candidates in technical fields is small, the effective conversion rate — that is, "applied and received the scholarship" — is one of the highest of any central scholarship. In several years the number of applications has been below the sanctioned 1,000, and all eligible verified applicants got through.

This is genuinely useful information for a family deciding whether the paperwork is worth the effort — the odds of receiving the scholarship, once the UDID and Medical Board certificates are in place, are much better than for AICTE Pragati or a merit scholarship at the same amount.

The paperwork moment that determines everything

For Saksham, the single document that decides eligibility is the UDID card issued by the Central Government's Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities. UDID replaced the older state-issued disability certificates in 2017 and is now the mandatory ID for all central disability scholarships and reservations.

Getting a UDID takes 30-90 days from the date you apply at swavlambancard.gov.in, which is longer than most Class 12 students realise. The critical timing point we emphasise to every reader is: apply for the UDID before you complete Class 12, not after admission. Students who apply for UDID in July after joining an engineering college often miss the Saksham application window because the UDID has not yet arrived.

The other document that trips first-time applicants is the Medical Board Disability Certificate. The UDID is the ID; the Medical Board certificate is the underlying medical assessment that supports the UDID. Both are required on the National Scholarship Portal. If a candidate uploads only the UDID without the underlying Medical Board certificate, the application is marked "documents incomplete" and often not corrected in time.

The other three AICTE scholarships — why Saksham is not stackable

Under AICTE's rules, a student can hold only one AICTE scholarship at a time. This means:

- A PwD girl student can technically apply to either AICTE Saksham OR AICTE Pragati — but not both. In practice, Saksham is usually the better bet because the applicant pool is smaller and the disability-specific criteria protect her from being compared against able-bodied candidates. - A PG PwD student cannot combine Saksham with the AICTE PG Scholarship — she chooses one. - The AICTE Saksham cannot be combined with a state-government PwD scholarship for the same year; the NSP self-declaration form flags stacked applications.

Disbursement — the hidden 3-6 month lag

Saksham funds are disbursed as Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) into the student's Aadhaar-linked bank account. The disbursement typically happens in two tranches per academic year — one after the mid-year institutional verification, one at year-end. The lag from application to first tranche is often 4-6 months from the application deadline. Students should plan first-semester fees assuming Saksham funds may not arrive in time to cover the immediate fee payment.

Where Saksham fits versus other PwD support

Beyond Saksham, PwD students have a few other paths: the National Fellowship for Persons with Disabilities (M.Phil/PhD level, larger monthly stipend), the National Scholarship for Persons with Disabilities (NSPwD) — for students in general education, not specifically technical — and various state-level PwD scholarships. Saksham is the single dedicated technical-UG scheme.

For a Class 12 PwD student targeting engineering or another AICTE-approved technical field, the practical order of operations is: (1) get the UDID at least 3 months before the AICTE application window, (2) confirm the target institution is AICTE-approved (this rules out many private universities), (3) file the NSP application in October-November, (4) follow up with the institution's scholarship cell in January if the "institute verification" status hasn't moved.

Always verify the current year's application window and disbursement status on scholarships.gov.in — AICTE does not accept applications through agents, and any consultancy demanding a fee for a Saksham application is a warning sign.
